- Ummmmmm, actually that will pretty much be the case with everyone. It is a subscription, like with your telephone service or the newspaper that you get. If you want to get the updated version ona regular basis (which you do, otherwise there is no point), you are just going to have to pay them. The single best company out there is by far Kaspersky. Check them out http://usa.kaspersky-labs.com/products/internet-security.php Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 is exactly what you are looking for. It contains an antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall. They are the best out there. It is a Russian company so what do you expect. The link I provided shows a comparison between Kaspersky, McAfee, and Norton. Don't waste your money on anything else, especially McAfee and Norton. They used to be good but recently they have just been crap. The softwares (running in the background) are just so...BIG and they bog down your computer. They take up so much RAM and processing power that they are not even worth it. Now, if you want to stay free, then go with AVG. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 AVG is completely free and it is actually very decent. I think AVG is even better than Norton or McAfee. The only thing is that it is only an anti-virus. AVG is very small and you won't even notice it running in the background. Zone Alarm is the free firewall to get. They are pretty good too for a free software. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=ho_za So AVG and ZoneAlarm is what I use. I used to do this for a living and I have tested Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, and AVG. Kaspersky won because there this one virus which was embedded in a compressed file and not even AVG was able to detect it. Kaspersky was the only one that detected and succesfully cleaned out the virus. Let me know, if you need anymore help.

- You can't do it all with one program, but if you are looking to go cheap, you can put together an okay package for yourself: 1) Always use the Windows XP Firewall. Don't have XP? Get ZoneAlarm -- it has a free for personal use version. 2) Antivirus: http://www.clamwin.com/ Free, open source project. Under construction, but I believe it may work for you. 3) AdAware from LavaSoft. Get the free for personal use version from download.com. Just search for "adaware" -- don't click the ads, though, get the program down the page. 4) Popup Blocker: Download Firefox and use it as your internet browser. It is safer and more modern than Internet Explorer as well. It's also free. Total cost: $0.
- Goto www.grisoft.com and get AVG for free and back it up with the free version of ewido. For a pop up blocker, download yahoo toolbar and/or google toolbar. They both have free pop up blocker. here are some free programs you can run to see if your PC is infected. - norton is what i use.. inexpensive and they update it every year
- Microsoft has one, I'm pretty sure that you only have to pay one time. Currently they're giving you a 90 day free trial. If you don't like it then you can simply end your free trial and not have to pay a penny. It's called Windows Live One Care. It has everything you wanted. Click on this link and you should be able to download the 90 day trial: http://www.windowsonecare.com/purchase/trial.aspx/?sc_cid=mscom_hp After the 90 days and you like what they offer then you could simply buy it. Microsoft should be a trustworthy company so there shouldn't be any problems. If that link doesn't work then you can go to www.microsoft.com to find what you need but I'm pretty sure that other link will work.
- avast has a free home edition of antivirus http://www.avast.com/
- I think your best bet would be McAfee Internet Security. It provides all of the services that you mentioned in your question. A new version of the software comes out once a year.
