Is there an anti spyware programme that will scan my pc for spyware without having to download it permenantly?

My pc is quite old and I have been told that having anti spyware installed on it will slow it down by at least 25%. I am thinking what is the lesser of two evils! No anti spyware or invasion by spyware! As I am fairly new to computers I am at the moment being fairly cautious about downloading things. Advice much appreciated. I am on XP proffesional.

  1. Hi, yeah u can visit http://onecare.live.com and run Microsoft's free safety scanner and it will remove all viruses, spyware, malware, adware, trojans, and registry errors turning ur pc almost as good as a fresh install. Good Luck!

  3. Do a free online panda scan, this program is good at removing virus & spyware: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/? Download this program, it will not slow down your computer but it will fix errors & protect you from spyware for free: http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
  4. There are two conflicting and contradictory ideas. You can run an online scan with Bitdefender.com . However, the program works by storing a library of virus patterns in your Temp folder, then running the scan in a similar manner to "offline" virus scanners. If the system slows down perceptibly, either the Temp folder is taking too much space on your hard drive OR you have a program that is continuously trying to IMMUNIZE your system by checking every file you open and every file that you close, along with every website you visit. If Bitdefender.com finds a problem but fails to fix it, post another question with that exact information. You might also try a firewall like ZoneAlarm. Many DSL services include a copy in their installation bundle without additional cost. Good luck, - CarlD
